Gary Lee Schmeltz
Gary Lee Schmeltz, 60, Bremen, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at the family dairy farm. He was born Aug. 3, 1955, in Mishawaka to James L. and Ruth (Hill) Schmeltz. He married Wanda May (Booe) Schmeltz on Sept. 12, 1992.
Surviving are wife: Wanda; children: Adam (Jennifer Anderson) Schmeltz; Olivia Schmeltz, both of Bremen; sister: Karen (Bradley) Sutter, Barrington, Ill.; and parents: James and Ruth Schmeltz, Wakarusa. He was preceded in death by a brother: Kent L. Schmeltz.
Gary was a farmer and Co-owner of Maier Pheasant Farm. He attended River Valley Church in Mishawaka and had a strong faith in God. He grew up in Baugo Church of the Brethren where he was baptized as a teenager. He was a 1973 graduate of Penn High School. Gary was a 4-H Leader for Madison Township for over 10 years and is the current president of the St. Joseph County Dairy Association. He enjoyed spending time with family and the competitive games, especially Euchre. He also enjoyed reading history related novels, the outdoors, sports, especially Purdue and all Chicago professional teams.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service on Friday, Jan. 22, all at River Valley Church, Mishawaka. Pastor Rick Callahan and Pastor Adam Gustine will officiate. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
