No. 3 Marian Shuts Down Grace
INDIANAPOLIS – Grace’s women’s basketball team was undone on the road on Wednesday, losing to No. 3 Marian 79-55.
The Lady Lancers (5-16, 0-9 Crossroads League) grabbed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds, but shooting issues continued to plague the squad.
Grace made 33 percent from the floor, 17 percent from the 3-point line and 50 percent from the free throw stripe in a losing effort.
The Knights (18-3, 9-0 CL), winners of 10 straight games, opened up a nine-point lead midway into the first quarter. Grace recovered with two straight baskets by Jesse Feitz to make the score 18-13 heading into the second quarter.
Feitz scored again to begin the second, cutting the gap to three. But that proved to be the closest Grace would get for the rest of the game. Marian erupted for 29 points in the quarter, including a last-second 3-pointer to go up 47-27 at halftime.
Marian shot a blistering 59 percent as a team. The Lady Knights were nearly automatic from the 3-point line by hitting 7-of-10.
The second half never produced a lasting run for Grace. The Knights maintained a 20-point cushion for most of the half as the Lady Lancers struggled to find consistency on offense.
Grace’s shooting problems were accentuated in the second half. The Lady Lancers only made 8-of-29 (28 percent) of their field goals, which included 29 percent from beyond the arc. Free throws were not much better as Grace connected on less than half of their tries (10-of-21) after halftime.
Feitz led Grace with 13 points and nine rebounds, nearly producing a double-double in 20 minutes of play. Her 13 points set a personal best for the senior forward.
Haley Richardson had 10 points, and Hannah Adams scored seven off the bench.
Sarah Feasby tallied 4 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, Kelsie Peterson added 3 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, and Brooke Sugg chipped in six points and two assists.
The Lady Lancers will look to rebound on Saturday against archrival Bethel. Grace hosts the Lady Pilots in a women’s/men’s doubleheader at the MOCC beginning at 1 p.m.
