WARSAW — Beginning in February, the Kosciusko Community YMCA will offer the nationally recognized Livestrong at the YMCA program for people affected by cancer.
The first year of this program has been fully supported through a $35,000 grant from the K21 Health Foundation. This evidence-based, 12-week physical activity and well-being program is designed to help survivors both during and after cancer treatment remain active in a safe, supportive environment. The Y is planning to offer this program to up to 40 participants and their families the first year, then grow it further in the future.
“K21 is excited to partner with the Y in offering this fantastic program to many in our community who are struggling with a diagnosis of cancer,” K21 president and CEO Rich Haddad said. “In addition, this grant allows family members of the patient to participate in other YMCA programs and will extend the membership for the survivor and their family to a full year. It’s a program that helps the entire family.”
“We are very thankful to K21 Health Foundation and their willingness to support our efforts to help cancer survivors and their families improve their health and quality of life,” said Stacy Thomas, Kosciusko Community YMCA director of healthy living. “In addition to the fitness program, the Y will also be starting a support group for cancer survivors and their families, which will meet the second Monday of each month beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living.”
