SPD Taking On Hoop Challenge For Veenstra Victory
SYRACUSE β Syracuse Police Department will be taking on the Lake City Hoopsters Wednesday, Feb. 17, to raise money for a worthy cause.
The Wawasee High School gym will open to spectators who want to see the showdown beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the game will begin at 7 p.m. Entry costs are $3 per person with ages 13 and under admitted free.
All of the proceeds from the event will go directly toward Jason Veenstra and family. Veenstra was working as a reserve officer with Syracuse Police Department last year, while also operating his own tree removal and trimming business. Veenstra was on the job, strapped to a tree located on South Syracuse-Webster Road while trimming limbs for his business when his pole touched a live wire.
Veenstra immediately dropped the pole, but suffered burns from the contact. According to the police report, Veenstra lost consciousness for a small period of time, but remained harnessed to the tree while police waited for NIPSCO to arrive and turn off power as a safety precaution.
Since the September 2015 incident, Veenstra has been recovering steadily. The family posts updates on a Facebook page called βThe Veenstra Victory.β
