Stichter Paces IUSB To Hoops Win
WHITING, Ind. – Riley Stichter continued his recent scoring surge to pace the Indiana University South Bend men’s basketball team to a win Wednesday night.
Stichter, who played at Wawasee High School, notched his fifth straight double-digit scoring performance with 21 points as the Titans picked up a pivotal Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Calumet College of St. Joseph by a 69-60 count.
Stichter, a 6-5 senior, was 8-10 overall from the field in the win. He hit 1-2 from 3-point range and was 4-5 from the free throw line in scoring his game-high 21 points. Stichter also led the Titans with nine rebounds in the contest.
The 17th win of the season is the best mark since 2012-13 when the team won 20 games.
IU South Bend controlled the entire game as they gained the lead with 16:14 to play in the first half on a Myluv Sutton triple. Sutton finished the game with 15 points including a three with 1:40 to play followed by a pair of free throws to help seal the win for the Titans.
The Titans never led by more than nine points but remained composed when CCSJ made runs throughout the contest. Leading by two points as the first half wound down, Mark White cashed in on a jumper with 37 seconds left to send the Titans into the intermission with a four point edge. White ended the game with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Despite being out-shot in the second half the Titans managed to get to the free throw line 27 times connecting on 17 of those 27 attempts. CCSJ got to the charity stripe just eight times in the final frame.
For a two minute span down the stretch the Titans defense answered the call holding CCSJ scoreless while scoring eight points of their own via a 7-0 run to extend their lead to eight points. Stichter netted all seven points for the Titans during the run.
In the final three minutes the defense continued to shine holding CCSJ to just eight points for the remainder of the contest.
Next up for the Titans will be No. 17 Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday. In their last meeting the Tigers defeated the Titans 103-78. Tipoff on Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
