Free Self-Defense Course For Sexual Assault Awareness Month
WARSAW — According to Department of Justice statistics there are roughly 237,868 victims of rape and sexual assault each year in the U.S. This is approximately one victim every two minutes. To encourage communities to work together to reduce these statistics April is nationally designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
In support of this designation Personal Safety Unlimited is offering a three-hour self-defense workshop for women and teens from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 23, at the Parkview Warsaw YMCA.
This event will be free of charge.
This “hands-on” course will be conducted by Personal Safety Unlimited owner and chief self-defense instructor, Steve Zorn. During the training, participants will learn the importance of being aware of their surroundings and how to avoid a potential assault.
Awareness is critical to learning personal safety. Participants will then move on to simple escape strategies, verbal self-defense tactics, and finally practical self-defense moves that can be used during standing or grounded assaults. The physical techniques are based on natural and instinctive movements that real people have used to escape violent situations, not complex karate-style techniques.
The skills are easy to learn, easy to remember and easy to use if forced to resist an attacker.
“This is my way of showing community support,” said Zorn. “It’s about empowering women and teens with the knowledge and skills to avoid or escape violent altercations. It gives them peace of mind knowing they have options in these situations.”
Zorn has over 27 years of experience in self-defense, crime prevention, and personal safety. During the past 17 years he has been privileged to empower men, women, teens, and children with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves safe from crime and violence. He has taught Womens Self-Defense courses throughout Indiana to corporations, non-profit groups, and other organizations.
