Wawasee Downs Plymouth, Turns Attention To Sectional [VIDEO]
SYRACUSE — It was the last night to add a few things and tweak any issues for the Wawasee gymnastics team. With the sectional approaching this Saturday the Warriors finished their season on a high note with a 103.925-91.175 win over Plymouth Tuesday evening.
“It was all about trying some new things tonight,” said Wawasee coach Nika Prather. “We wanted to add some things to our routines tonight, that’s always the goal in the meet before sectional. We had new things on beam, even on bars. Actually, we added a little something in every event. It proved pretty successful.”
Wawasee recorded its second-highest score of the season as a team against Plymouth behind some impressive performances.
Wawasee excelled on the floor, scoring a 26.875 as a team. Reagan Atwood led the way in the event with a 9.55. Jada Parzygnot took second for the Warriors hitting a 9.00 even with her performance. Karly Gruett (8.90) of Plymouth took third.
Atwood and Parzygnot went first-second, respectively, on beam and bars as well. Atwood recorded a no-fall on beam, scoring a 9.05 and earned an 8.425 on bars. Parzygnot also had a no-fall routine on beam (8.75) and secured second on bars with an 8.25. Katelyn Baker (8.25) took third on beam for Wawasee while Alyssa Minnix (8.225) was third on bars.
“We were impressed with what we saw tonight and we know going into sectional that we can keep some of those new things in our routines,” Prather stated. “Alyssa was sick today but insisted on competing and she still did very well and that was encouraging.”
Wawasee won the JV meet 85.25-43.42. Meghan Beer won the all-around with a 29.875 taking first on vault (8.350), bars (5.850) and beam (8.100).
The Warriors now turn their attention to the sectional field which they will host this Saturday. Wawasee has beaten everyone in the field at least once but has also been bested by some of the field’s top teams as well. Wawasee has won a state-record 23 sectional championships and will be pursuing its first title since 2004.
