IUSB Claims Tourney Victory
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – For the first time in seven tries, the Indiana University South Bend men’s basketball team was able to down Olivet Nazarene University Thursday night.
The seventh seeded Titans knocked off the second seeded Tigers 90-75 to move to the next round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.
The victory was the first CCAC Tournament game the Titans have won since the 2012-13 season.
Despite arriving 45 minutes late due to bus troubles, IU South Bend started hitting on all cylinders once the game finally tipped off hitting 10 triples in the opening half.
T.J. Benner, a sophomore from Mishawaka and Javonte Young, a senior from Mishawaka, led a host of Titans in double figures as they each scored a team-high 17 points.
Freshman Joe Bannister added 13 points off the bench while freshman Myluv Sutton added 12 points.
Senior Riley Stichter, a Wawasee High School product, dominated the glass with 17 rebounds. The 6-5 senior guard also added seven points for the Titans.
In the opening minutes of the game it looked as if the No. 17 ranked Tigers were going to dominate the game as they took an early 11-1 lead. IU South Bend did not take its first lead until the 11:58 mark when Taylor Brooks turned a Benner dish into two points. Over the last seven minutes of the first half the Titans outscored ONU 18-11 to take a 48-41 advantage into the break.
Benner gave IU South Bend a double digit lead five minutes into the second frame with another triple but that lead would be sliced to four points before Jeremy Jones answered with a three to put the Titans up seven with just over 14 minutes on the clock.
ONU would once again cut the Titan lead to four points but the visitors kept the pressure on and quickly built its lead to 13 points with a 9-0 run which put the game out of reach as the Titans upset the Tigers on their home court.
IU South Bend will travel to Saint Xavier University on Saturday as the Cougars defeated Trinity International University on Thursday to advance to the semi-final round of the CCAC Tournament.
