Knights Slip By Warriors In Opener
SYRACUSE — Spring sports are officially upon us. The final season of the 2015-16 prep sports calendar was ushered in on a windy Tuesday night by the boys and girls track teams from East Noble and Wawasee. The visiting Knights escaped what was a back-and-forth girls meet for a 72-60 win.
It was a meet the two teams have been trying to have since 2012 but, due to weather in the past, it had never happened despite being scheduled each of the past four seasons. Getting that leg up before spring break was a nice boost for the team and the Warriors were happy with the performance they put together, all things considered.
“The meet ended up being much closer than we originally figured,” began Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster. “East Noble, traditionally, has a pretty strong track program and we’re a little bit down, as far as overall talent goes. So, it was nice to see the girls going step for step with East Noble tonight.”
Some of those surprises came from the coach’s daughter, Sarah Lancaster. The senior took first in the 200 meter dash (28.64), an event that proved to be very beneficial for Wawasee. The Warriors swept the event with Kenzie Smith (29.06) and Adriene Gill (29.26) respectively taking second and third.
“I’m not one to brag on my own but Sarah won the 200 tonight and I didn’t expect that,” the coach continued. “That was a nice surprise. She was also on the 4×800 relay which had a very strong run, even though they didn’t win. We were hoping for a decent time but we got an even better time than we were anticipating.
“In the 4×400 they fought the whole way and made East Noble earn that race. Those things were really, really nice to see.”
The 4×800 team of Lancaster, Elizabeth Zorn, Aubrey Kuhn and Yanelly Pizana ran a 10:41.14, second to East Noble’s 10:37.93. In the 4×400 East Noble (4:28.41) bested Wawasee’s 4:34.40. That relay team was made up of Kuhn, Lancaster, Smith and Liz Hardy.
Wawasee won six of the evening’s 16 events, with Hannah-Marie Lamle leading the way with two individual victories. The sophomore took first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.56 and again in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.43. Lamle was also second in the high jump at 4-4.
The 4×100 relay team of Gill, Lamle, Kelsey Swartz and Skylar Janda clocked in at 55.24 to earn first place over East Noble’s 55.34 for the team’s only relay victory of the evening.
Zorn was the other individual to pick up a win on the track. The junior won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:37.00.
Alexis Manges was the lone Warrior to win a field event as she took first in the discus throw with a 105-8. Brooklyn McCulloch grabbed second with a 100-8. Hardy took second in the long jump with a 14-7. Alexis Brinson was third in the pole vault (6-6) while Katlyn Kennedy took second in shot (36-1).
Caitlin Wortinger (29.96) won the junior varsity running of the 200 meter dash. Wawasee’s JV 4×400 relay also took first with a time of 4:51.19. That team was made up of Molly Swartz, Delanie Bame, Reagan Atwood and Zorn.
Wawasee (0-1) will host Columbia City Monday night.
