WARSAW — Approximately, 11 p.m. Saturday, March 26, emergency responders were summoned to the intersection of US 30 and Silveus Crossing for a serious injury crash involving two passenger vehicles.
Units arrived to find both vehicles in the ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection. A 1998 Volkswagen Passat was sitting up against the traffic signal support pole with both of its occupants entrapped. The second vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Liberty, had also crashed into the traffic signal control box, disabling the traffic signals at the intersection.
Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory extricated the occupants of the Volkswagen. The driver, 25-year-old Cody Rowe, of Etna Green, was transported by ambulance to Fort Wayne. The passenger of the Volkswagen, Ryan Scott, 23, Warsaw, was flown by Lutheran Air, which landed at the scene in the westbound lanes of US 30. Both are in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty, 41-year-old Maria Luisa Ugalda-Rosas, Warsaw, refused any medical attention. She was however transported by police to Kosciusko community Hospital as standard protocol for toxicology testing for a driver involved in a serious crash. Toxicology reports are pending for both drivers.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Jeep was westbound on US 30 and had a green traffic signal when the Volkswagen, traveling, northbound, pulled into the path of the Jeep. the crash remains under investigation.
US 30 westbound was completely closed for approximately one hour as the scene was investigated and the helicopter landed. One westbound lane was opened until the damaged vehicles could be removed. INDOT worked throughout the night to restore the traffic signals.
