David Lynn Shoemaker Jr., 27, 251 Randolph St., Nappanee, has had a charge filed for possession or sale of precursors, a level 6 felony. Shoemaker was held on $5,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
Charges against Earl Joseph Schafstall, 31, 216 N. Walnut St., Etna Green, are: dealing in methamphetamine, enhancing circumstances, a level 4 felony; possession of methamphetamine, enhancing circumstances, a level 5 felony; and possession of two or more chemical reagents or precursors with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, a level 6 felony. Schafstall was held on $10,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
The enhancement on charges against Sheets, Mettler and Shoemaker relate to the offenses being conducted in the presence of a child less than 18 years of age and knowing the child present might be able to see or hear the offense.
The affidavit of probable cause states police learned an individual purchased marijuana from Sheetz and during the purchase there was a chemical odor associated with manufacturing meth. When police went to the residence Schafstall and Mettler answered the door. After police were invited into the home, they could smell a chemical odor associated with manufacturing meth. Police could also see a bottle cap with a tube protruding through the cap, or an HCL generator and drain opener in plain sight.
A consent to search the residence was given by Mittler whose name is on the lease. At the residence were Sheetz, Shoemaker, Mittler, Schafstall, a female and juvenile. A search of Schafstall resulted in a plastic bag containing pesudoephedrine pills. Found in the home were chemical reagents and/or precursors used to manufacture a controlled substance and several one pot meth labs in various stages.
During the investigation police learned Schafstall and Sheetz allegedly manufacture methamphetamine at the residence and Sheetz had arranged for Schaftstall to sell methamphetamine. Police also learned Mettler purchased the sulfuric acid, knowing it was going to be used to manufacture meth, and that Shoemaker purchases pesudoephedrine to trade for meth. Several admitted to using the drug after it was manufactured.
Police were also told there were attempts to get the female and juvenile to leave, but they would not. Shoemaker stated because the juvenile was present, he moved the one pot lab from the kitchen sink to the cabinet under the sink.
