Turnstone Competes Across Country
FORT WAYNE – Several Turnstone teams competed across the United States last weekend in tournaments.
The youth varsity and adult wheelchair teams competed in Louisville at the Wheelchair Basketball Nationals.
The youth team, Turnstone Flyers, finished 10th out of 50 teams with a 2-2 showing. After a 56-30 loss to the Grand Rapids Pacers, Turnstone won 44-36 against the Seattle Sonics and 52-40 against RHI Racers from Indianapolis. In its final game, Turnstone fell 58-31 to Salt Lake City Rush. The Flyers finished 26-14 overall this season.
The Turnstone Bandits adult team went 1-2 to finish 12th overall of 89 teams and ended up 27-9 overall this season. In its games at Louisville, the Bandits lost 54-50 to the TIRR Hotwheels from Houston and 52-41 to Memphis Rollin’ Grizzlies. In its final game, the Bandits won 50-47 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Turnstone Flyers sled hockey team took third place in the Intermediate C Tier 2 Division tournament in Detroit.
The Flyers were 3-2 in game action, culminating with a 1-0 win against the Denver Avalanche Warriors in the third-place game. The Flyers were victorious in a 3-2 final against the Houston Imperials and 5-0 against the Los Angeles Kings, and falling 2-0 to the New England Warriors and 2-0 to the Chicago Hornets.
In the United States Association for Blind Athletes regional tournament in New Jersey, a total of four of the USA Men’s National players and four others competed in the goalball tournaments. Those athletes are associated with Turnstone programs but playing for national teams.
Crystal Mossberger played with the New York Lady Lions in the Women’s Division, to which the team lost all four games.
Erik Rodriguez won gold with the Columbus Crushers, finishing first in the Men’s Intermediate Division after beating BSO Wings 12-7.
Abel Del Toro won gold with the Michigan Omega in the Men’s Top Division, beating California Crown 12-9. Daryl Walker and Grej Prejeska were members of California Crown. Matt Simpson and Cody Carmicle were on the fifth-place South Florida Crossfire team.
