Young, Langford Top All-State Hoops Honorees
INDIANAPOLIS — Princeton’s Jackie Young and New Albany’s Romeo Langford added something special — at times even remarkable — to Indiana high school basketball this season.
Both put on a show and both were the top vote-getters for the Associated Press Indiana All-State boys and girls basketball teams.
Langford, who averaged 30.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game this season as a sophomore, completely rewrote New Albany’s record book and led the team to a Class 4-A state title last month.
Young’s season came to an unexpected halt when her Princeton Tigers were upset by Southridge in the sectional round of the postseason tournament, but not before she became the top scorer in Indiana history.
Camryn Buhr of Class 4-A state champion Penn, is among individuals joining Young on the five-player girls first team.
The AP’s All-State teams were chosen by a combination of media members and observations by the Associated Press.
The Notre Dame-bound Young surpassed Wawasee’s Shanna Zolman as the all-time leading scorer in girls basketball in a Jan. 14 game at Wood Memorial.
She broke the Indiana all-time boys or girls record on Jan. 21 against Pike Central to surpass Damon Bailey.
Langford scored 28 points in New Albany’s state title game win.
Other members on the boys first team are Southport’s Joey Brunk, Lawrence Central’s Kyle Guy, Southport’s Paul Scruggs, and Indianapolis Tech’s CJ Walker.
On the girls side, Kristin Spolyar of Lebanon, Lindsey Corsaro of Indianapolis Roncalli, and Tyasha Harris of Indianapolis Heritage Christian join Buhr and Young on the first team.
The area is well represented with a slew of players earning either high honorable mention or honorable mention accolades.
Warsaw senior standout guard Paul Marandet, who helped lead the Tigers to conference, sectional and regional titles, was a high honorable mention pick. Also named high honorable mention were senior Braxton Linville and junior Vinny Miranda of NorthWood. Linville will play at Grace College next season.
Warsaw star junior Kyle Mangas, the top scorer for the Tigers, was an honorable mention choice. Joining Mangas were Whitko sophomore star Nate Walpole, along with seniors DK Fox of NorthWood and Brady Bechtel of Goshen. Bechtel is slated to play at Bethel College next season.
Tippecanoe Valley star junior Anne Secrest was a high honorable mention selection. Secrest, who has committed to play at Youngstown State University, was the top scorer and rebounder as the Vikings won conference and sectional championships.
