Silver Lake Council Received Bids, Hears Concerns
SILVER LAKE — The Silver Lake Town Council had a busy agenda during its regular meeting Wednesday, April 13.
Two bids had arrived for the solid waste disposal for 2016. Clerk-Treasurer Tonya Conley opened them and board member Chad Miner read them aloud.
The first bid came from Advanced Disposal, Claypool, bidding $39,540 for the year. The second was from Stafford’s Solid Waste Service Inc., Warsaw, for $44,541 for the year. Though Stafford had the higher bid, the board decided to choose their services again this year, as they have received no complaints.
The owners of a local mobile home park appeared before the board concerning an easement for a new mobile home to replace an older one. The easement is 15 feet from the road. The current mobile home exceeds the easement but the new one will be set back and turned at an angle that will make it more compliant.
Under citizen comments, a local resident thanked the council for taking care of blighted properties near the lake. However, she added, there are still many properties that need attention or that the owners do not keep cleaned up.
“I didn’t know this was the town dump, but these people act like it is,” she said.
She suggested issuing citations, which the board and Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter both said they would look into.
Residents along Neher road brought up concerns about paving. They would like to see it paved, which could require widening. The reason for this, council member Phil Shalley said, is because pavers nowadays are typically 14 feet wide, whereas the road, as it is now, would require an 11-foot paver.
Residents are concerned, however, that widening the road could cause damage to their properties. The council will look into the situation and make a decision at a later date.
Hollopeter asked the board to consider allowing the Silver Lake Police Department to hire Eric Kelley and Cody Mangun as part-time officers. The department had budgeted $10,000 as their part of a grant they ended up not receiving. This budgeted money will help send both through the police academy, though both at different times.
The council tabled the decision until next month.
