Whitko Softball: Hanna Yohe Homers As ‘Cats Win Big
LIGONIER — Back-to-back games leads to back-to-back wins for the Whitko softball team.
After trouncing South Side 11-1 on Tuesday, the Wildcats returned to action Wednesday night and hung another 11 runs on the board in an 11-3 stomping of West Noble.
“This was a good game for us,” said Whitko head coach Michelle Garr. “It was much better than yesterday’s game. It definitely seemed like the girls were on the same page today and gelled a lot better than yesterday. We’ve looked good the past two days despite not playing in almost two weeks.”
Whitko was hot from the start as the Wildcats five runs in the first two innings, including four in the first stanza. The Yohe twins got things started as Haley Yohe got on base in the lead-off spot and was knocked home by her sister Hanna. Reannon Hopkins knocked the second Yohe to put the Wildcats up 2-0. An error helped Hopkins cross home while Tori Silveus scored the final run of the inning on an RBI from Emily Hughes.
Hanna “She must drive a Ford” Yohe cleared her team’s dugout in the top of the second with a blistering home run that went well over the fence and dinged a Chevy. The 5-0 lead held up until the bottom of the fourth when West Noble finally pushed across a run.
Audrey Fulford scored West Noble’s first run on an RBI from Olivia Reidenbach. Reidenbach would end up with two RBIs for the game. With the gap now closed to 5-1, the Wildcats opted for some insurance in the top of the fifth.
Whitko scored five in the fifth behind some timely hitting. Andrea Snavely’s double scored both Whitney Marsh and Ellie Snep. Snavely was brought home shortly after on an RBI from Shelby Martin. Emalee Duggins and Anna Ousley scored the final two runs of the frame for the ‘Cats.
The stellar offense would have counted for nothing if it were not for solid defensive play by Whitko as well. Hopkins held down the hot corner well. When she wasn’t getting the work it was Kennedy Krull at short making most plays in the infield. Silveus had a strong outing in the circle, recording the win and showing some resiliency by finishing an inning after taking a line drive off of her thigh in the fourth. Snep recorded the save, offering a nice compliment to Silveus’ performance. The two combined to allow just three hits.
“We saw two nice performances today from our pitchers,” Garr said. “That was good to see and is big for us moving forward. Our biggest issue right now is figuring out how to keep the pressure on our opponents. Sometimes we let up too early. We need to focus on keeping our foot on the gas.”
Whitko (3-0) will travel to play county rival Columbia City Friday night at Morsches Park.
