Little Girl Befriends Garbageman, Gives Him Birthday Cupcake
BLOOMINGTON, ILL. — Delvar Dopson, a local garbageman in Bloomington, Ill., and Brooklyn Andracke, a 3-year-old girl, may not exactly be your typical companions. And yet, the bond between these two seems as precious as any true friendship.
Brooklyn’s been intrigued by the garbageman for about a year now, making sure to wave at him every Thursday with her mother. In fact, Thursdays have become her favorite day.
But as exciting as waving is, even more thrilling would be the chance to actually meet Dopson. And that’s precisely what Brooklyn got to do on her birthday according to her mother, Traci Andracke.
“Brooklyn and I wrapped up one of her birthday cupcakes and waited for him,” Andracke explained via the Facebook page of Frank Somerville of KTVU, who shared her version of the sweet story in a post that’s garnered nearly 10,000 shares. “When he came down our street, she ran to the corner. We were waving like usual and I motioned for him to come over by us.
“He pulled over, got out and gave us his BIG smile. Brooklyn was instantly speechless as she handed him the cupcake. I explained to him that he makes our day every Thursday, and we really appreciate the honking and waving, and how special of a day it is for us.”
TODAY reached out to Andracke for additional comment but didn’t hear back.
According to the post, Dopson said that he, too, looks forward to Thursdays because he knows it’ll bring a chance to see Brooklyn.
In fact, he even goes out of his way to make sure he doesn’t miss the encounter: “He said that he has a meeting every Thursday morning and always tries to get out of there in a hurry so that he can make sure to see us every week.”
“After he left, we continued onto daycare. Brooklyn was unusually quiet in the backseat. I asked her if she was OK, and she said, ‘Mommy I’m so happy.'”
Andracke made sure to include an explanation of why she and her daughter are so thankful for Dopson’s kindness. It simply makes their “heart[s] happy.”
“Thank you for the joy that you bring Brooklyn every Thursday morning, for making her birthday special…It may be a little thing that you do, but it means so much to us!”
