Triton Sports Wrap: April 26
Softball Romps Past North Miami
A 10-run fourth inning by Triton surprised host North Miami Tuesday. The Trojans made the big inning stand up in a 15-5, five-inning stunner in Denver.
The fourth inning started with Triton leading just 2-1, but got out of hand quickly. Kacie Pugh had an RBI single, and Taytum Hargrave had the big blow with a three-run triple. The Trojans also had four bases loaded walks in the inning.
The shocking outburst is just two years after North Miami annihilated Triton in the semi-state, and shut out Triton last April in Bourbon.
Hargrave had four RBIs overall and scored two runs. Megan Berger had two hits and two runs scored and Hannah Woodard scored all three times she reached base before leaving with a broken foot. Triton had just eight hits, but drew 14 walks and each starter scored at least one run.
Courtney Jennings was efficient in the circle, striking out just two but gave up just five hits in the five-inning complete game. Jennings held North Miami’s thunder of Carlee Lefebvre, Ally Sumpter and Josie Knauff to an 0-for-9 night.
Triton (5-3) will host Pioneer Friday.
Trojans Hold Off Redskins
A night after Knox held Triton to just three hits in a shutout, Triton broke out the offense to beat Knox, 10-9, at Ken Keller Field in Bourbon.
The Trojans had eight hits in the game and busted out to a 5-0 lead, then a 10-2 lead after three innings. Knox responded with six runs in the top of the sixth inning to make things very interesting, but could not equalize.
Triton was led by Adam Stevens at the plate, who had three hits and three RBIs. Dylan Hensley and Nate Flenar each had two hits and two RBIs.
Hensley survived the carnage on the mound to get the win, pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts.
Knox had Scott Trojan collect three hits and an RBI, and Kolin Mann had two hits and two RBIs. Triton touched up Knox starter Drew Dan for nine runs – only two were earned – before leaving in the third inning.
Triton moves to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference, with a non-conference make-up game against Tippecanoe Valley Friday evening.
