Crown Point Police Searching For Escaped Lake County Inmate
CROWN POINT — Police are searching for a Lake County Jail inmate who escaped Saturday, April 30, after walking away from a laundry area where he was permitted to work, an official said.
It’s believed Richard N. Campos, 22, of East Chicago, left the jail about noon and got into a vehicle driven by a woman, Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said. The escape likely was planned, he said.
Campos had trustee status and was in the laundry area on a work detail, Buncich said.
Eight officers were out searching Saturday into Sunday for Campos, he said.
“We’re following up on every lead,” he said.
Campos may be in East Chicago or Hammond. The Sheriff’s Department has alerted police agencies in the area, he said.
Online Lake County court records show Campos is on probation in a 2014 misdemeanor intimidation case and is facing several new charges, including misdemeanor resisting law enforcement and operating while intoxicated.
If convicted of escape, Campos faces an automatic five-year sentence, Buncich said.
Anyone with information about Campos’ whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at (219) 755-3400.
