Wisconsin Scores Five In Eighth To Derail Cubs
SOUTH BEND – Wisconsin used a five-run eighth innings to take down the South Bend Cubs, 5-4, Tuesday night at Four Winds Field.
Ryan Kellogg had a good outing for the Cubs, going six innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs in six innings. The Cubs held the Timber Rattlers scoreless for the first 16 innings of the series, but lost that streak late in the game Tuesday.
Jake Gatewood’s three-run homer, his first of the season, capped a five-run eighth inning that saw South Bend’s 3-0 lead quickly evaporate. Isan Diaz also homered in the eighth in a solo shot for the Timber Rattlers, which move to 12-14 on the season.
The Cubs (14-10) posted single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Eloy Jimenez drove in his 13th RBI of the spring with a single in the third. Eddy Martinez added an RBI hit and Matt Rose smacked his second homer of the spring.
The South Bend Cubs will look to take the series tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 10:35 a.m. as Freddy Peralta (1-0, 1.72 ERA) takes on Justin Steele (1-3, 9.49 ERA) on Education Day at Four Winds Fields.
