WARSAW — This is the year to celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial, 1816-2016. All over the state there are celebrations being planned, and festivities being enjoyed.
Here at the Warsaw Community Public Library, we have many offerings on Indiana, whether it is sports, vacationing, or learning the history of our great state.
Starting with the most appropriate offering is “Indiana at 200: a Celebration of the Hoosier State,” by the Bicentennial Commission. This book shows the best of our state with words and images depicting what make us special.
Another great history book would be “Hoosiers: a New History of Indiana,” by James H. Madison. This book takes us through the early West of 1776, to becoming a state in 1816, and covers decades such as the Great Depression and government.
Of course, Indiana is basketball, so check out “Rising from the Ashes: the Return of Indiana University Basketball,” by Terry Hutchens, as well as “We Lived the Game: Legends of Indiana Women’s Basketball,” by Dick Denny.
Lastly, everyone needs to vacation Indiana! These books will help you plan a quick weekend trip to a full vacation with the family. “Off the Beaten Path: Indiana” by Phyllis Thomas , will help you find less known areas to check out. “Weird Indiana,” by Mark Marimen, is one of my favorite books to find some quirky roadside stops to make your trips more interesting. “Kids Love Indiana: a Parent’s Guide to Exploring Fun Places in Indiana,” by George and Michele Zavatsky, find fun places to vacation with your children throughout the state.
Whatever you want to do, and wherever you want to go, whether it is Indiana or elsewhere, make the Warsaw Community Public Library the first stop in planning your getaway, and have a wonderful vacation!
