Trojans Keep End Of Bargain
After blitzing through the Hoosier North Athletic Conference regular season, as well as Wednesday’s HNAC first round, Triton closed the deal Thursday. Beating Knox on four courts and LaVille in another, Triton completed the slam in the HNAC Girls Tennis Championships.
All three of Triton’s singles courts defeated Knox opponents. Kolbie Mason completed the two-day tournament without losing a game, beating Shelby Faverty love and love. Quinn Downing beat Maria Hasneri three and love and Shayla May took out Hannah Lueth love and four.
At No. 1 doubles, Emma Ross and Hannah Wanemacher rolled over Knox’s Sommer Shepherd and Mattie Timm one and love. At No. 2 doubles, Tatum Thompson and Megan McFarland was pushed by LaVille’s Brianna Lindke and Sydney Han 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Coach Al Peckham was named HNAC Coach of the Year and his team currently sits at 12-1 overall, 6-0 in the inaugural HNAC round robin. May, Triton’s lone varsity senior, was named HNAC Player of the Year.
Triton will close up its regular season Monday at South Bend Riley and await the IHSAA tennis draw, which has Triton among five teams at the Bremen Girls Tennis Sectional.
Trojans Close HNAC Schedule With Win
Triton closed out its Hoosier North Athletic Conference 5-4 overall with a 7-3 win over Caston Thursday at Keyser Field.
Triton built a 4-0 lead after two innings, using a Megan Berger double and Courtney Jennings single in the first. A Taytum Hargrave RBI triple followed by a Kayla Kreft single stacked the deck. Hargrave scored two runs in the game and had three stolen bases.
Heather Stichter added two RBIs and Kacie Pugh offered another RBI as the Trojans moved over .500 at 9-8 overall.
Jennings won in the circle, striking out four and gave up just three hits.
Triton will visit Plymouth Saturday morning.
Trey Watkins Has Big Night At HNAC
Triton’s Trey Watkins finished second in the discus and took sixth in the shot put to lead Triton at the Hoosier North Athletic Conference Boys Track Championships held at Culver.
Watkins went 146-01.75 in the discus, about five feet short of champion Isaac Eash of LaVille’s 150-11.25 championship toss. In shot put, Watkins went 41-6.5.
Ethan Berry also had a pair of field placings, taking fifth in pole vault at 8-6 and sixth in long jump at 17-7.5.
Ryan Horne was seventh in shot put at 40-10.5 and Austin Irwin seventh in discus at 120-11.5. Ty Orsand gave the Trojans another place in the field, a 5-0 high jump to take eighth place.
Jeremy Jones had the highest Triton output on the track, taking sixth in the 100 at 11.87. Kaelon Page was seventh in the 400 at 57.92 and Bailey Watkins was eighth in the two-mile at 11:44.81. Both of the Triton 4×400 and 4×800 relays were eighth, going 4:12.92 and 9:46.72, respectively.
Winamac won the meet with 173.5 points, Triton a distant eighth at 30.33.
Triton will compete next at the Bremen Boys Track Sectional next Thursday.
Bruins Get Past Trojans
Bethany Christian made its opportunities count Thursday in a 4-1 baseball win at Triton.
Bethany plated solo runs in the first and second then added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Triton scratched its only run across in the third on an RBI single from Zac Pitney, bringing home Billy Smith.
Adams Stevens took the loss for Triton, struggling with his command in walking three and giving up a hit in just two innings of work, allowing two earned runs. Ryan Snyder went the rest of the way, allowing seven Bruins to reach base and striking out five.
Stevens did have three hits for Triton, which collected eight overall in the game.
Joel Miller allowed eight hits and walked five, but went the distance for Bethany to get the win.
Triton (8-10) will visit Pioneer Saturday in a HNAC doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
