Softball Picks Up Another Win
Whitko got another quality start from Ellie Snep in the circle and the bats warmed up on the miserably cold Saturday in a 10-2 win at Heritage.
Snep fired a two-hitter and struck out three, but was on the short end of a 2-0 score heading into the fifth. Whitko then erupted for eight runs in the fifth in two more in the sixth as Heritage had no answer.
Kennedy Krull led the offense with three hits, Hanna Yohe had two hits, Emily Hughes had a triple and Snep added a double. Whitko had 12 hits overall in the contest.
In the JV game, Whitko used three hits from Kristina Slater in its 10-hit attack to beat Heritage 8-1. Jessica Brit struck out 10 Patriots in the win.
Whitko (13-5) will jump back into Three Rivers Conference play Monday in hosting Peru.
Baseball Splits With Monroe Central At Ball State
In a unique opportunity to not only see an uncommon opponent, but to play at an uncommon site, Whitko faced Monroe Central in a baseball doubleheader Saturday at Ball State University.
Monroe claimed a 4-2 lead in game one, then tacked on single runs to build an eventual 7-4 win. Seth Wilson and Brady Jones each tripled for Monroe.
Alex Bechtold was the offensive star for the Wildcats in game one, going 3-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Hunter Sroufe, Garrett Smiley and Tanner Gaff each had two hits.
Brayton Miller outdueled River West on the hill, West on the hook for all seven runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
Whitko made the big innings count in game two, hanging four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to beat Monroe 12-6.
The Wildcats has 16 hits in the game, four of which left the yard. Landen Goff, Alex Robbins, Gaff and Smiley all went deep, Gaff’s part of a 4-5 day. Gaff and Smiley combined to score six runs and drive in three. Goff added three RBIs.
Riley Anderson got the win, going 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs.
Whitko moves to 17-5 on the season with the split, and will host Peru in a big TRC matchup Monday in South Whitley.
