Tippecanoe Valley Tennis: Give Me Shelter
WARSAW – While some decided to press their luck outdoors Saturday, Tippecanoe Valley had a larger agenda. With three conference matches to play and only two days to squeeze them in, Valley hosted Rochester and Southwood indoors at the Warsaw Racquet Club in a series of make-up matches.
Valley lost to Rochester, 5-0, in the days first matchup, then Rochester came back and beat Southwood, 5-0, in match two. In the final matchup, Southwood beat Valley 5-0 to close out a long day of tennis at the club. But a long headache of trying to figure out Three Rivers Conference make-up matches with sectionals set to start this Wednesday.
Rochester’s Zoe Bixler found rhythm in the No. 1 singles match against Aerin Shewman. After a 6-3 win in the first set as both players looked uncomfortable in the indoor setting, Bixler loosened up and fired home quality winners in a 6-1 second set.
Allie Bickle of Rochester had little trouble at No. 2 singles against Maddy Henninger, moving the ball around consistently in a 6-1, 6-1 final. Emma Barontini used the exact same concept in beating Lea Stouder 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles matchup.
Valley’s Morgan Brazo and Kennedy Niedbalski looked the sharper side early on, taking a quick lead on Rochester’s Arrianah Jacobs and Rosalie Navarro, but the Zebra pair rallied to take the set 6-4 and found their rhythm in set two, 6-1.
Abbie McCarter and Mariah Yochum had little trouble in beating Brooke Danner and Cassidy Cave 6-1, 6-0.
In the Southwood matchup for Valley, Brazo and Niedbalski was the only court to take a game, but couldn’t sustain the momentum. The Valley duo lost 6-4 in the first set to Mary Siebers and Brooke Wyatt, but came back to win the second set 6-4. Southwood’s duo would come back to take the final set.
Danner and Cave lost to Hannah King and Kelly Schmidt one and three in the two doubles match.
Shewman, Henninger and Stouder managed to win just eight total games in losses to Anna Rees, Drue Gentry and Kira Hobson.
All five of Rochester’s courts won against Southwood in straight sets, a 5-0 final. Bixler was taken to 7-5 against Rees in the first set, but rallied 6-3 in the second. Two doubles won in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and claimed a 6-4 clincher in the second.
Valley had to get the matches in Saturday because it visits Northfield Monday in the final TRC match of the season. The Vikings will then take part in the five-team Warsaw Girls Tennis Sectional Wednesday. Warsaw will draw the sectional matchups Monday evening.
