Community Comes Through For Homeless Hounds
KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — In less than a week, nearly a dozen local residents have come through for a group of greyhounds displaced after the racetrack where they lived shut down.
Stephanie Jones of American Greyhound contacted Ink Free News to give an update following last week’s story about the greyhounds. As of Monday, May 23, the Valparaiso-based rescue has been able to place 27 of these dogs in foster homes throughout northern Indiana. This was due in large part, Jones said, to the response from the Kosciusko County area.
Volunteers from the rescue drove several days to Mobile, Ala., to pick up the dogs and bring them back to northern Indiana, Jones said. Once they have been cleared by a local veterinarian, the greyhounds will go up for adoption via the American Greyhound website.
“Our foster home program is the core of our operations,” Jones said. “Without foster homes, we could not rescue the amount of dogs that we do. We gained 11 new foster homes and still applications from the community coming in. It’s incredible. We were able to make a difference in the lives of a lot hounds this weekend, some just a year and half old.”
Jones added that volunteers are headed to West Memphis, Ark., Saturday, June 11, to pick up another batch of displaced greyhounds and there will be opportunities to foster those ones, as well.
“We have been so pleased with our new foster homes and always have room for more,” she said.
