High School And Milford School Busy With Construction
SYRACUSE — There is noise in the band room at Wawasee High School this summer, but not the kind generated by musical instruments. Instead, the noise is coming from the floor being leveled and other remodeling work being done in the room.
The band room is among the several summer construction projects in Wawasee schools. This year, nearly all of the work is in the high school and Milford School. Summer projects are typically paid for through the capital projects fund of the school corporation budget.
Also in the band room, the walls will be re-configured and new cabinets for instruments will be installed. The choir room across the hallway is also being remodeled. Nearby the tech center is being remodeled, too, and will have a lower ceiling and a new air handler.
The basketball concessions area is being moved more out into the commons area and being upgraded. The media center is getting an extensive makeover and two new rooms will be added. Those rooms will be work stations for students to collaborate on projects and there will also be a help desk to address problems or questions with the 1:1 computer devices. In addition, about two-thirds of the books in the media center are being removed because they had not been checked out within at least the last five years.
In the auxiliary gym lights are being replaced with new LED lights. The art rooms are being extensively remodeled, too, with one wall being removed to allow for expansion of space. A new kiln is being installed among other work being done. The photography darkroom is being remodeled as well. Furniture is being replaced in five language arts classrooms.
Drinking fountains are being replaced throughout the building. The main electrical service panel and some transformers are being upgraded. C wing restrooms are being remodeled and in the brickyard, the air handler is being updated and ceiling tiles replaced.
On the outside of the building, on the brickwork where the elevator shaft is located near the main entrance, a large Warrior logo will be installed. One section of new bleachers will be added to the baseball field, tennis courts and football field. And there will be a new set of bleachers for the band by the east goalpost at the football field.
At Milford School, two computer rooms are being returned to classrooms. Upgrading will be done to the boilers, kitchen, freezer, dry storage and new equipment will be installed. There will be new serving lines too.
The main gym will get new basketball goals and a new sound system. Renovations in the small gym will allow it to be used as an eating area if needed. Two sets of restrooms are being redone with new plumbing. An awning is being installed at the southeast entrance coming out to the sidewalk where the buses are.
Also at Milford, the outdoor track is being resurfaced and an electronic sign will be added on the south wall.
The only work being done apart from the high school and Milford is installing new above ground fuel tanks at the transportation building on Kern Road in Syracuse. A new emergency generator will be installed too.
Milestone Construction was awarded the bid for work at Milford School, while Hamilton Hunter Builders is doing the work at the high school.
