Tough Day At Office For Kingsmen
Penn was the remaining area team left in the state softball and state baseball tournaments, and that came to an end Saturday.
The Penn softball lost in the Class 4-A state finals to Avon, 4-3, when Avon rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the championship. Mackenzi Nyland drove in the first run with a fielders choice in the seventh after the Orioles opened the inning with two straight singles.
The winning run came home when Hannah Eiler hit a ball to second that wasn’t handled, allowing the championship run to come home.
Monica Carter had two hits and an RBI and Sydni Foster added a hit, two walks and a run for the Orioles, which finish 26-5 overall.
The Kingsmen (26-4) had Alyssa Griman single and drive in two and Katie Quinlan collect three hits, a stolen base and score a run.
Haylie Foster outdueled Danielle Watson in the circle, Foster allowing just five hits and no walks, striking out seven. Watson was erratic, giving up five hits and walking seven in 6.1 innings, striking out eight.
Avon scored two runs in the second, followed by three Penn runs in the third and the final two Avon runs in the seventh.
