Former Penn Star Just Misses Olympics
OMAHA, Neb. – Penn High School graduate Bethany Galat was on the big stage Sunday and narrowly missed taking on a bigger stage.
Galat, a sophomore at Texas A&M University, finished third in the 400-meter individual medley. Galat needed to finish inside the top two to automatically qualify for the Rio Olympics, which were claimed by Maya DiRado and Elizabeth Beisel.
DiRado qualified for her first OIympic team besting 2012 silver medalist Elizabeth Beisel with a time of 4:33.73, a couple lengths ahead of Beisel, who held of a charging Galat. The former Kingsmen superstar led for a portion of the race, but fell off in the breaststroke and had to make up time in the freestyle, running out of room as Beisel claimed the automatic ticket.
Beisel finished in 4:36.81, Galat, a three-time state champion in the 200 IM and two-time state champion in the breaststroke, came in at 4:37.69.
Galat, who was featured in a 2014 Sports Illustrated “Faces In The Crowd” segment, also holds a local distinction as Aug. 18, 2014 was named “Bethany Galat Day” in the city of Mishawaka for her exploits as a swimmer.
Elsewhere in swim qualifying, in the men’s 400 freestyle, Connor Jaeger and Conor Dwyer are heading to the Olympics for a second time after finishing 1-2. Jaeger won in 3:43.79. Dwyer was second in 3:44.66, just 0.38 ahead of third-place Townley Haas.
Zane Grothe, who trains in Bloomington with the Indiana University team, was fourth in 3:45.60.
IU graduate Cody Miller qualified second for Monday night’s final of the men’s 100 breaststroke after twice bettering his personal best. He is aiming to become the Hoosiers’ first U.S. Olympic swimmer since 1976.
Miller clocked 59.33 in prelims and 59.09 in semifinals. His time is No. 4 in the world this year and makes him No. 4 in U.S. history.
Also in the 100 breaststroke, the Hoosiers’ Ian Finnerty was 11th in 1:00.96, a personal best. IU graduate Kevin Swander, 32, who came out of a four-year retirement, was 56th in 1:02.89. Avon’s Chandler Bray, 17, a national high school record-holder, was 72nd in 1:03.35.
In preliminaries of the women’s 400 IM, 17-year-old Sammie Burchill improved her seed by 51 places in finishing 27th in 4:50.55, a Carmel Swim Club record. Her sister, Veronica, 18, was 29th in prelims of the 100 butterfly in 1:00.17 and did not advance to semifinals.
