Cubs Get Hot Again, Pound Hot Rods [VIDEO]
SOUTH BEND – A night after the South Bend Cubs stunned Bowling Green, the homesiders continued to wear the rally caps with a 10-6 win Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field.
Saturday night, South Bend rallied from a 7-2 deficit and then scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth for a stunning victory. A day later, trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, South Bend rallied with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Hot Rods came up with two runs in the sixth to claw back to trail just 7-6, but South Bend plated single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to seal up the victory.
Every Cub had at least one hit on the day, led by the three from PJ Higgins. His double in the fourth started the rally, to which Eddy Martinez had the big knock in the inning, driving in two with a double. Alberto Mineo continued the carousel with another two-run double later in the inning.
Higgins added an RBI double in the fifth and Mineo added an RBI single in the seventh.
Cubs starting pitcher Carson Sands needed the runs to move to 7-2 on the season, but it wasn’t pretty. Sands was touched up for six runs on seven hits in his five innings. Angel Moreno’s first homer of the year in the fourth inning – a two-run shot – put Bowling Green up 4-0 and left the impression the Hot Rods were ready to pull away. Manny Sanchez and Brandon Lowe added solo homers in the sixth for Bowling Green.
Tanner Griggs, John Williamson and Dillon Maples allowed just one hit the final three innings for the Cubs.
Bowling Green starter Roel Ramirez (3-7) was touched up for five runs on eight hits in three-plus innings of work.
Wawasee High School student Alexandra Fiscus opened the day with a rousing version of the national anthem.
South Bend (54-33) and Bowling Green (45-41) wrap up their series Monday with a 7 p.m. start.
