Miller Named NISCA All-American
SYRACUSE — The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association named its All-Americans for 2016 last week and one local name stood out. Wawasee’s Paige Miller made the cut to receive All-American honors for the first time in her career.
Miller, then a junior, was a standout for Julie Robinson’s Warrior squad last season. She was able to cap her season at the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals in Indianapolis where she would be involved with one of the weekend’s most thrilling events, the 500 free.
An exciting prelim on Friday between Miller, Morgan Miller of Carmel and Lauren Kallay of Chesterton allowed all three to reach the finals on Saturday. In the finals Wawasee’s distance star would swim a 4:54.37, placing her fourth in the state and, as reported last week, a spot on the All-American list for the event. A swimmer must have a top 100 time in the nation to receive All-American status from the NISCA. Miller’s time placed her 81st in the country.
While Miller was the only local swimmer to receive such a big honor, other Northern Lakes Conference swimmers and divers earned the nod as well.
Katie Hughes of Northridge made the list for the 500 free, she finished as state runner-up in the event. Northridge also saw its 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays make the cut. Lauren Boone of Concord made the list for diving.
On the boys side it was Northridge’s 200 free and 400 free relays making the cut along with Spencer Lehman representing the Raiders in both the 200 IM and 500 free. Hudson Kay of Goshen made the cut in diving.
