Comeback Cubs Do It Again
SOUTH BEND – The Force was strong for Alberto Mineo, who singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning sending the South Bend Cubs to a 4-3 win Sunday over the Peoria Chiefs at Four Winds Field on Star Wars Day.
Mineo fouled off several 0-2 pitches before finally hitting a line drive to right field allowing Donnie Dewees to score from second base to give South Bend a 4-3 lead.
After Dylan Tice homered for Peoria in the first inning, South Bend tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning thanks to an RBI double by Matt Rose off the center field fence scoring Andrew Monasterio who had singled.
P.J. Higgins registered his first triple of the season in the third inning scoring Carlos Sepulveda (single). Higgins line drive to right field landed just in front of a diving Bladimil Franco with the ball then rolling to the wall putting South Bend in front 2-1.
Bryant Flete blasted his fourth home run of the year, all in July, in the seventh to give South Bend a 3-1 advantage.
Peoria was able to tie the game in the eighth inning on a two-out 2 RBI double by Chris Chinea off reliever Tanner Griggs.
Griggs (1-0) collected the win while James Norwood hung a zero in the ninth to record his sixth save.
The Cubs and Chiefs play a doubleheader at Four Winds Field tomorrow. Game one starts at 1 p.m. with Adbert Alzolay starting for South Bend with Justin Steele taking the mound in game two.
