Mineo Sparks Cubs Win
MIDLAND, Mich. – Alberto Mineo hit a run-scoring single in the first inning, leading the South Bend Cubs to a 2-1 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday.
Dillon Maples got Zach McKinstry to ground out with a runner on second to end the game for his fifth save of the season.
P.J. Higgins scored on Mineo’s single to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead after he reached base with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
After South Bend added a run in the fifth on a single by Eloy Jimenez, the Loons cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when McKinstry hit an RBI single, driving in Brendon Davis.
South Bend starter Adbert Alzolay (7-4) picked up the win after allowing five hits over six scoreless innings. Opposing starter Yadier Alvarez (1-1) took the loss in the Midwest League game after allowing one run and three hits over four innings.
