Jimenez, Cubs Continue Hot Streak
MIDLAND, Mich. – Eloy Jimenez hit a run-scoring double in the first inning, leading the South Bend Cubs to a 5-1 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Monday.
The double by Jimenez, part of a two-run inning, gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead before Eddy Martinez hit an RBI single later in the inning.
The Cubs later tacked on three runs in the second, including a double by Jimenez that scored P.J. Higgins.
South Bend starter Justin Steele (4-5) picked up the win after allowing three hits over five scoreless innings. Opposing starter Jordan Sheffield (0-1) took the loss in the Midwest League game after allowing two runs and three hits while only recording two outs.
The first-place Cubs (24-13) will finish up its series at Great Lakes Tuesday evening with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch before embarking on a seven-game homestand starting Wednesday with Fort Wayne.
