Cubs Complete Sweep Of Loons
SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs finished off a four game sweep of the Great Lakes Loons with a 4-1 victory Tuesday at Four Winds Field.
South Bend took control of the game as they struck for three runs on four hits in the first inning against Loons starter Imani Abdullah.
Albert Mineo got the scoring started with a single that brought home Andruw Monasterio. Mineo has now driven in 17 runs over his first 20 games with South Bend. Tyler Alamo collected a two-out, two-RBI single plating P.J. Higgins (walk) and Mineo to extend the Cubs lead to 3-0.
Great Lakes picked up a run off South Bend starting pitcher Ryan Kellogg in the fourth inning but the Cubs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
Vimael Machin hit the first pitch of the fourth into left field for a double. Machin scored on Alamo’s RBI single to put South Bend in front 4-1.
Kellogg (6-7) made the lead stand up and earned the victory as he tossed five innings of four hit baseball and allowed his first run since July 18.
Casey Bloomquist earned a hold for scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Carson Sands got five outs and handed the game over to Jared Cheek who got the twenty-seventh out for his second save.
The South Bend Cubs will enjoy a day off Wednesday. Thursday South Bend begins a three-city eleven game road trip in Dayton.
