BEAVER CREEK, COLO. — A photo taken by a firefighter battling the Beaver Creek Fire near the Colorado-Wyoming border is getting quite the attention online.
The photo shows a “fire whirl” and was taken on Sunday, Aug. 14, by Charles Bolt, with engine 1419. Since it has been shared to the Beaver Creek Fire Facebook page, it has been shared more than 4,000 times!
A fire whirl is a whirlwind caused by a fire that’s often made up of flame or ash. These occur when intense rising heat and turbulent wind condition form whirling eddies of air.
The Beaver Creek Fire started burning on June 19 – and isn’t expected to be fully contained until October. It has grown to 36,435 acres of land 24 miles north of Walden.
On Sunday — the day of the fire whirl — the blaze was the most active it had been in almost a week, according to firefighters.
