Alvarez, Loons Shut Out Cubs
SOUTH BEND – Yadier Alvarez allowed just three hits over five innings, leading the Great Lakes Loons over the South Bend Cubs in a 2-0 win on Friday.
Alvarez (3-2) struck out six to pick up the win.
Great Lakes scored its runs when Brendon Davis hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Logan Landon hit an RBI single in the ninth.
Jose Paulino (2-1) went six innings, allowing one run and five hits while striking out two in the Midwest League game. Andrew Istler retired the side in order for his first save of the season.
The Cubs were blanked for the sixth time this season, while the Loons’ staff recorded their 10th shutout of the year.
Despite the loss, South Bend is 10-5 against Great Lakes this season. The Cubs will try to right the ship Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
