Whitecaps Knock Out Cubs
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – Beau Burrows and Toller Boardman combined for a shutout as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the South Bend Cubs 3-0 on Friday.
Boardman (8-3) picked up the win after he struck out five and walked one while allowing one hit over four scoreless innings. Tanner Griggs (2-2) went two innings, allowing three runs and four hits in the Midwest League game. He also struck out one and walked one.
In the sixth inning, West Michigan went up 2-0 after Arvicent Perez hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Joey Havrilak. The Whitecaps scored again in the seventh inning when Leonardo Laffita hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Cam Gibson.
Will Maddox singled twice, also stealing a base in the win.
Matt Rose singled three times, also stealing a base for the Cubs. South Bend was blanked for the eighth time this season, while the West Michigan staff recorded its eighth shutout of the year.
The Cubs were officially knocked out of the Eastern Division race with the loss, now four games back of Bowling Green, which clinched a playoff berth with its win and South Bend’s loss.
South Bend ends the regular season in hosting Dayton in a three-game set starting Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
