NLC Lady Linksters In Regional Mix
KENDALLVILLE – There will be a definite Northern Lakes Conference flavor at the East Noble Girls Golf Regional come Saturday.
The outstanding league will be well-represented at the final stop before the State Finals by a handful of teams.
The duo of Warsaw and Wawasee headline the list of local squads making a bid Saturday at the Cobblestone Golf Course for a berth at State.
The Tigers finished third in their own rain-delayed sectional at the Stonehenge Golf Club last weekend. Coach Tad Nieter’s vastly-improved squad shot a 391 in soggy conditions to earn a regional berth for the first time since 2013.
Senior Madi Graham leads the way for Warsaw at the top of their lineup. The outstanding two-sport athlete shot a 90 at the sectional. Graham is also no stranger to the regional. She fired a round of 80 last year as an individual playing in the field at the East Noble Regional held at Noble Hawk. Graham shot a 101 as a freshman back in 2013 when the Tigers finished in fourth place at the regional played at Noble Hawk.
The Tigers will also count on senior Page Desenberg to help lead a team that has three sophomores in the lineup. Desenberg, a three-sport athlete at WCHS, shot a 95 at the sectional. Warsaw will also have sophomores Delaney Wihebrink, Izzy Ray and Madelyn Ray competing in the regional.
Wawasee earned another regional berth with a second-place showing in the Warsaw Sectional by shooting a 385. The Warriors are led by stellar seniors Aubrey Schmeltz and Madison Beaman at the top two spots in their lineup. The pair have plenty of regional experience as this is the third straight year for Wawasee in the regional. Schmeltz shot an 82 and Beaman a 94 last year as Wawasee finished in fifth place in the regional. The pair helped the Warriors to a third-place finish and a State Finals berth with rounds of 90 and 92 respectively in the regional held at Cobblestone in 2014.
Coach Steve Coverstone’s Warriors also got strong play from sophomore Zoe White and freshman Jadison Rostochak at the sectional. Sophomore Lesley Tayagua completes the Wawasee lineup.
NorthWood, which claimed the NLC regular-season and tournament championships this fall, will be one to watch on Saturday. The Panthers. who have won or shared the overall NLC title the last five years, return four players from last year’s regional runner-up team that shot 325 at Noble Hawk to finish behind Penn (315) and advance to State.
The Panthers, coached by Adam Yoder, are led by Summer Stillson. The smooth southpaw will play in the regional Saturday for the fourth time in her outstanding career. Stillson shot 80 last year, while she had an 86 as a sophomore when the Panthers were fifth in the regional. She shot an 88 as a freshman in 2013 when NorthWood was regional runner-up.
Mackenzie Weaver has also been a huge contributor for NorthWood. The sophomore led the team at the sectional with a 79. Weaver shot an outstanding 77 at the regional last year, tying with then senior teammate Linnzie Richner, to pace the Panthers.
The Panther lineup also features junior Madison Richner and sophomore Abby Slabaugh, both of whom played in the regional a year ago. Richner, who has returned from offseason surgeries, was also a part of the regional lineup in 2014. Senior Alaina Benjamin rounds out the lineup for the Panthers.
Concord and Northridge will also be in the 18-team field on Saturday. The Minutemen were second and the Raiders third at the East Noble Sectional played at Noble Hawk. Carroll won the title there with a 338, followed by Concord (357) and Northridge (376). Erika Shirley led Concord with an 84. Outstanding freshman Braedyn O’Dell paced the Raiders with a 76, which was good for sectional runner-up honors.
Manchester will also be competing at Cobblestone. The Squires shot a 372 on Monday to win the Huntington North Sectional crown, the program’s first since 1973. Manchester, which also won the Three Rivers Conference tournament title, is led by junior Lydia Little at its No. 1 position. The lineup also includes senior Karly Eichenauer, who led the team with a 91 at the sectional, along with sophomores Kelsey Eichenauer and Madyson Ulrey and freshman Samantha Kissell.
The list of individuals in the regional field will include Kinley Lingenfelter of Rochester. The outstanding senior shot an eye-popping four-under 67 at Stonehenge to claim sectional honors. Lingenfelter fired a 75 at the regional a year ago to earn a berth in the State Finals.
Among the other area players qualifying for the regional are Katie Johnson of Plymouth, Lexi Miller of Bremen, Courtney King of Elkhart Memorial, Rosa Trippel of Mishawaka Marian, Deborah Janowski of Mishawaka, Hannah Godfrey of West Noble, Regina Raber of Fairfield and Abbey Polanco of Columbia City.
The regional field includes sectional champions NorthWood, Penn, Homestead, Fort Wayne Dwenger, Carroll and Manchester. Penn shot a 336 to win their own sectional, while Homestead fired a 305 to claim the Norwell Sectional crown. Dwenger shot 347 at Angola, while Carroll won the East Noble Sectional title with a 338. Also in the field are South Bend St. Joseph, Elkhart Central, Bellmont, Fort Wayne Canterbury, DeKalb, Leo, Huntington North and Southwood.
Action at Cobblestone on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
The top three teams in the field and the top five individuals not on an advancing team move on to compete in the State Finals on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
