Boys Tennis: Falcons, Eagles Fall; NorthWood Duo Advances
The postseason run for the Fairfield boys tennis team came to an end in the semistate round of the state tournament series Saturday.
The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season in dropping a 3-2 final to No. 13 Delta in the Homestead Semistate.
Delta, now 23-3, advances to play Carmel next Friday in the quarterfinal round of the State Finals at Carmel. The Falcons finish the season at 27-1, a program record for wins.
Fairfield won at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles on Saturday. Isaac Miller posted a 6-4, 7-5 win in singles action and the duo of Jesse Grimm and Dylan Kaufman captured a 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-4 on their doubles court.
Fairfield freshman Joel Mast lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for coach Mike Fibrin’s team. Mast finished 25-3 in his first prep season.
South Bend St. Joseph continued its undefeated season by topping Culver Academies 3-2 to win the Culver Academies Semistate title.
The Indians, who improved to 19-0, won at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in straight sets over the host Eagles.
Culver Academies defeated Warsaw 5-0 and Plymouth 3-2 earlier in the week to win the Culver Academies Regional title. The Eagles, who finish at 14-6, won the semistate crown a year ago.
St. Joe, which beat Penn to win the Portage Regional championship, advances to play Bloomington North next Friday in the quarterfinals of the State Finals.
The NorthWood duo of Cam Stillson and Brant Mast earned a sectional doubles title Saturday. The pair beat Eric Nofziger and Spencer Griffis of Angola 6-4, 6-2 to claim the No. 1 doubles title of the Concord Sectional.
Stillson and Mast are now 4-0 in postseason play after going just 10-12 during the regular season. The pair advance to the LaPorte Regional round next Saturday.
Bethany Christian senior Byeong Min Lim saw his season end with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Jake Horner of Angola in the No. 1 singles sectional final at Concord. Min Lim finishes his career as Bethany’s all-time leader in victories.
