St. Joseph County Dispatcher Helps Woman Deliver Grandchild Over Phone
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MICH. — A 9-1-1 dispatcher from St. Joseph County has quite a story to tell, after helping a woman deliver her grandchild at home.
Dispatcher Rachel Cook took the call early Thursday morning, Oct. 20, from the mother of a 20-year-old who was going into labor.
Just three minutes into the call, the woman started delivering.
Thanks to Cook’s instruction over the phone, a perfectly healthy baby boy was delivered.
Cook is a mother herself and says her motherly instincts helped her keep calm.
“We don’t see when it happens when we answer the phones, so we use our imaginations a lot to just kind of think of what was happening. I had a vision in my mind of what was happening. I had a picture of what happened, what everyone looked like, I mean, happy baby, happy grandma, happy mom,” Cook said.
Cook only started working as a dispatcher earlier this year.
The St. Joseph County 9-1-1 Center gave her an award for a job well done.
