Freaky 5K Raises $5,000 For Cancer Care Fund
KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — It was a beautiful Saturday morning, Oct. 29, for the 150 plus runners and walkers participating in the second annual Lutheran Health Network-KCH Freaky 5K through the Beyer Trail and along the Warsaw Greenway.
Approximately $5,000 was raised and will be given to the Cancer Care Fund of Kosciusko County to help cancer patients and their families through the financial burdens of a cancer diagnosis.
For the title sponsor, KCH spokesperson Mary Childers updated the attendees on the new radiation treatment facility located behind the Cancer Center. “It’s important for the community to see that we are committed to cancer services and this latest technology will help our doctors with better treatment of cancer diagnosis.”
Dr. Musaberk Goksel addressed the crowd with praise for the Cancer Care Fund. “My colleagues across the country are amazed that our community has a fund like this that reaches out to assist financially burdened patients. I can tell you it helps the patients eliminate that stress from their battle.”
Other sponsors included OSMC, The Car Company, Warsaw Family Dentistry, Miller’s Merry Manor, and Warsaw Buick GMC. Rabb Kinetico provided water for the participants and Martin’s Supermarket provided apples and bananas. Race directors Cindy Knafel and Ron Smock said “thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, 100 percent of our participants’ registration fees will go directly to the fund and will be available to help with mortgages, rent, food, gas and other financial expenses that can arise from a battle with cancer.”
The Cancer Care Fund is administered by the K21 Health Foundation at no cost to the CCF. Anyone wishing to volunteer as a committee member on one of the CCF fundraisers, visit the CancerCareFundKC FaceBook page and send the committee a message. The committee is always looking for new people with new ideas to help friends and neighbors in Kosciusko County suffering from a cancer diagnosis.
Freaky 5K race photos will be posted on the CCF Facebook page and in a gallery on its website, www.cancercarefundkc.org.
