Nick’s Picks: Anno Catulorum
It’s been two days since the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series.
How freakin’ cool is that!? Baseball fans everywhere should have been able to appreciate Wednesday’s game seven. It was excellent in every way.
I wrote, at length, last week about what this team means to me and to so many Cubs fans. There are stories pouring out from every corner of the sports world about how big this is. You don’t need me explaining anything else about the Cubs winning it all. Just know that I will be in a good mood for the year to come. If you need a favor, ask me before Opening Day 2017.
The Cubs won the World Series, that’s really all that matters. I have nothing else to talk about in the sports world.
So, politics!
Election Day is Tuesday! Get out and vote, but educate yourself first. It takes very little effort and helps you to actively take part in our democracy. I’m not just talking about the presidential election, I’m talking about local races. School boards, state congressional races, gubernatorial races. Get out and vote!
You hate Trump and Clinton? Don’t vote for them. You can leave part of your ballot blank if you want. You can also vote for Gary Johnson, who is the third candidate on the ballot. Or, you can write-in one of 15 state approved presidential candidates:
Darrell L. Castle, Jill Stein, Ray C. Brown, Roque De La Fuenta, Richard Duncan, Cherunda Fox, Tom Hoefling, Denny C. Jackson, Melissa L. Kelly, Laurence Kotlikoff, Joseph Maldonado, Ric Mullis, Matthew (None of the Above) Roberts, Emidio Soltysik and Monica Moorehead.
Yes, those are actual people that you, as Hoosiers, can write-in this Tuesday on the ballot. There are plenty of options. Don’t sit home with some lame excuse.
The same goes for the gubernatorial race. You can vote for John Gregg and his awesome mustache. Eric Holcomb and his mysteriously convincing likeness to Keith Olbermann. Rex Bell and his awesome slogan, “Rex Bell: Let Freedom Ring.” Or either write-in candidate, Adam Adkins or Christopher Stried. DON’T SIT HOME. Exercise your right to vote. Please.
Okay, no more political talk. I’m sure most of you scrolled past anyway.
Just a reminder, the Chicago Cubs are World Series champions. Eat your heart out, St. Louis.
Last Week: 6-3
Overall: 61-33
High School Football Sectional Championship Friday 11/4
Homestead (8-2) at Warsaw (6-4), 7 p.m.
The Scoop: Can Tiger Town be Title Town tonight? The Tigers look to capture their first-ever sectional title as No. 11 Homestead comes to town. I can’t emphasize enough how big it is for Warsaw to have this game at home. That could play a big role in what happens out there tonight. The Spartans have been consistent all season and average 38 ppg on offense. Warsaw is not far behind at 33 ppg. Both defenses surrender exactly 22.5 ppg. That tells me this game will come down to which defense stops bending and starts breaking first. Homestead is the favorite and with good reason. This is one of those “prove it” games for Warsaw. The Tigers have to buck an ugly historical trend tonight, I think they can do it. But it will take a great effort to topple a team like Homestead that is defending its 2015 sectional title.
The Warsaw cheer block likes to say “Nick G for Prez” anytime I pick the Tigers. I won’t be getting that love this week, but if Warsaw wins, all the eligible students can certainly cast a vote for Coach Jensen on Tuesday. I like this game to be closer than most but I see the Spartans getting the win.
Nick’s Pick: Homestead 42, Warsaw 34.
NorthWood (11-0) at East Noble (8-2), 7 p.m.
The Scoop: The Panthers look to continue their fantastic season be capturing a sectional crown on East Noble’s field. Actually, East Noble has turf. The Panthers are undefeated (1-0) when playing on turf this season. NorthWood is also undefeated (5-0) on the road this year. NorthWood is undefeated when it rains, when it doesn’t rain. NorthWood is undefeated when Donald Trump tweets something mean. NorthWood is undefeated when Hillary Clinton tells a lie. NORTHWOOD IS UNDEFEATED. That’s all that matters for me this week. The Panthers put up 45 ppg and give up 17. This team is legitimate. East Noble will be able to score with the Panthers. They have the ability, but I don’t think they will outscore the Panthers. Did I mention this team is undefeated? That doesn’t happen by accident.
Nick’s Pick: NorthWood 44, East Noble 24.
College Football 11/5
Navy (5-2) at Notre Dame (3-5), 11:30 a.m. Jacksonville
The Scoop: ND held off a bad Miami team to snap a two-game losing streak. I really think that will turn the page for this crap season and make it less crappy. Look for a big, big day out of DeShone Kizer. QuickLane Bowl, look out, the Irish are coming!
Nick’s Pick: Notre Dame 38, Navy 24.
Indiana (4-4, 2-3) at Rutgers (2-6, 0-5), 12 p.m.
The Scoop: IU somehow managed to lose to this dumpster fire of a team last year. They simply can’t do that this year. Notre Dame has to play somebody in that Detroit bowl game, why not have it be IU? (Hahahahaha can you imagine?)
Nick’s Pick: Indiana 37, Rutgers 20.
Purdue (3-5, 1-4) at Minnesota (6-2, 3-2), 3:30 p.m.
The Scoop: Well, there really is not much to say about a team after they have 62 scored on them at home. That’s what happened to Purdue last week against Penn State. This week will not be much easier as the Golden Gophers are having a good year and are currently on a three-game winning streak. Minnesota should win big in this one while Purdue waits for its new coach and new era.
Nick’s Pick: Minnesota 45, Purdue 17.
NFL Week 9 11/6
Indianapolis (3-5) at Green Bay (4-3), 4:25 p.m.
The Scoop: The Colts will look to embarrass themselves on a national stage once again this week. I’m so happy the Cubs won because my Colts are killing me. Do you think Theo Epstein knows anything about football?
Nick’s Pick: Packers 27, Colts 24.
