Board Approves Tentative 1028 Hearing Date
SYRACUSE — Just like a house, school buildings need attention and renovations. In an effort to keep up with building needs, the Wawasee Community School Corp. is moving forward with more construction or renovation projects.
Dr. Tom Edington, WCSC superintendent, briefly explained the scope of the proposed projects and asked the school board during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Nov. 8, to approve a date for a 1028 public hearing, required by state law for projects of a larger scope. A tentative date of Tuesday, Nov. 29, has been set for the hearing.
Edington noted the proposal includes replacing lighting in Wawasee High School, Wawasee Middle School and Milford School. Renovations would be done in the high school auditorium and lecture room, the hallway next to the lecture room and old heating units replaced as needed.
General renovations such as replacing ceiling tiles and more would be done at Milford School, while brickwork and improvements to the planetarium would be projects at WMS.
Renovations would be completed to allow for more space in the new welding program of the Wawasee Area Career and Technical Cooperative and equipment would be added for the advanced manufacturing program of the WACTC.
Edington added the trailers currently used for the alternative school on the high school campus would be sold, and then a parking lot with limited access would be installed the high school band could use for practicing. Lighting, mechanical and energy efficiency work would also be completed in the central office of the school corporation.
“We would also take a look at the athletic fields at every school,” he said, but no specific projects have been targeted as of yet.
Other agenda items included:
• WMS will host the First Lego League Robotics Tournament Nov. 19.
• WMS Builders Club, due to an increase in community service projects, was recognized by Kiwanis International as a 2015-16 Distinguished Club.
