Grace Men’s Basketball: Lancers Stay Undefeated
WINONA LAKE – The Grace College men’s basketball team continued their undefeated start to the season Tuesday night against Lawrence Tech at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Erik Bowen’s double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds led the Lancers to an 84-79 victory as the hosts moved to 4-0 on the young season.
Neither team could consistently take control of the lead in the first half. The lead changed four times with the largest lead by each team reaching seven.
Lawrence Tech (0-2) got out to an early lead by getting physical and earning points in the paint. An 11-2 run by the Blue Devils put them ahead by seven heading towards the midway point in the first half. Four of the points during that run come on second chance opportunities.
The tables turned as Grace’s benched stepped up to put the Lancers ahead. Charlie Warner singlehandedly went on an 8-0 run to give Grace a seven-point lead. The Lancers took advantage of sloppy play by the Blue Devils, scoring 16 points off turnovers in the first half.
Grace was able to get Lawrence Tech’s frontcourt in foul trouble. The Blue Devil’s Jon Osantowski was a nonfactor in the first half after picking up three quick fouls.
Both teams received ample help off the bench. The Lancers had 19 points off the bench, eight of which came from Warner, and six points from Tre Olive. Grace went into the half up 37-33.
Bowen was a jack of all trades in the first half. He scored 7 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and even added 3 assists.
Robbie Geohegan led the Blue Devils in the first half with 10 points.
Grace stayed in control of the game for most of the second half. Their largest lead reached 15, and it looked like the Lancers were going to cruise to a victory. However, the Blue Devils were not going to go down easy.
Lawrence Tech worked to cut the lead down to two midway through the half after a 10-2 run. Grace did some damage control and went on a 19-6 run of its own to reach the highest lead of the game at 15. Most of the Lancer points came from the paint or from the free throw line during that run.
The Lancers were up by 10 with a minute left. Some clutch 3-point shooting by the Blue Devils brought them to within three down the stretch, but Bowen iced the game with two made free throws to seal an 84-79 victory. Osantowski fouled out with four minutes remaining. LTU’s Travis Baker also reached his fifth foul within the final minute.
The benches for both teams continued to contribute as each team’s bench scored over 37 points. Olive led Grace in scoring, finishing with 18.
Grace spread the wealth on offense, having four players in double-digit scoring. Warner finished with 12 points, and Chad Hoffer added 10 of his own. Bowen finished with a double-double consisting of 12 points and a whopping 17 rebounds.
Lawrence Tech had four players of their own score in double digits. Geohegan led the Blue Devils with 21. Jay Redman and Payton DeWildt both finished with 13 points. Baker added 12 points to the cause.
