Prep Football: Mevis Headlines AP All-State Picks
Warsaw kicker Andrew Mevis had a senior season to remember on the gridiron.
It’s no surprise that the standout performer headlines a lengthy and impressive list of area gridders named to the Associated Press All-State teams for the 2016-17 season.
Mevis, who handled all the kicking duties for coach Phil Jensen’s Tigers, was an All-State selection in Class 6-A. Mevis, who has not made his college decision yet, will play in the Under Armour All-American Bowl next month in Florida.
Warsaw record-setting quarterback Michael Jensen was an honorable mention pick on the Class 6-A team, as was standout Tiger linebacker Jeremy David.
The NorthWood duo of receiver DeAndre Smart and tight end Drew Minnich earned All-State honors in Class 4-A after helping the Panthers to a state runner-up finish. Quarterback Trey Bilinski and offensive lineman Andrew Miller of the Panthers were honorable mention choices.
Tyler Smith, the do-it-all senior standout for Wawasee, was an honorable mention pick at punter for Class 4-A.
The Whitko duo of running back Garrett Elder and linebacker Conner Sherwin earned honorable mention status in Class 2-A.
Penn, which fell in a Class 6-A semistate game, had defensive back Paul Moala earn All-State honors. The Kingsmen also had Matt Kominkiewicz (receiver), Anthony Torres (tight end), Mike Dhulvetter (offensive line), Nate Boone (defensive line), Keegan Hurst (defensive line) and Will Vakalahi (linebacker) earn honorable mention accolades.
The duo of defensive back Cedric Mitchell of Concord and defensive back Luke Campbell of Mishawaka were named All-Stae for Class 5-A. Honorable mention choices included quarterback CJ Detweiler of Goshen, running back Austin Falukner of Mishawaka, and the Concord trio of kicker Josh Gorball and offensive linemen Grant Magnuson and Kaelen Taylor. Also earning honorable mention honors were linebackers Dylan Back and Alex Lehr and defensive back Rummel Johnson, all from Goshen.
The quartet of running back Alexander Horvath of Mishawaka Marian, along with defensive lineman Michael Dennison of Marion, defensive back Kenny Kernn of Jimtown and linebacker Jakeb Young of Culver Academies were All-State in Class 3-A. The honorable mention list included offensive linemen Nick Mammolenti of JImtown and Conor Glon of Marian, kicker Uriel Macias of West Noble and defensive lineman Dalton Whitman of Jimtown.
The list of honorable mention choices for Class 2-A included quarterback Matt Box (Bremen), running back Grant Klocknow (Bremen) and linebacker Tyler Moser (Bremen).
Ethan Kertai of LaVille was an All-State selection in Class 1-A as an all-purpose player. Honorable mention picks included running back Troy Bolds, offensive lineman Marcellus Anderson, defensive lineman Chase Crecelius and linebacker Josh Krsek, all of Culver.
