Girl, 10, Reunited With Teddy Bear Lost In Fort Lauderdale Shootings
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. — A young girl has been reunited with her teddy bear that was lost while she evacuated the Ft. Lauderdale airport during last week’s deadly shooting.
Ten-year-old Courtney Gelinas and her family are visiting from Canada and had asked the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for help finding the missing stuffed animal named “Rufus.” The police complied and sent out a tweet Monday with a picture of the bear, asking the public to be on the lookout.
The girl’s prayers were then answered and the bear was located.
Tuesday, Courtney was reunited with Rufus, which was a gift from her grandfather when he passed away 10 years ago that she sleeps with every night.
Officials say tens of thousands of items were left behind in the airport as panicked travelers evacuated Friday as accused gunman Esteban Santiago opened fire in the baggage claim area, killing five people and wounding six others.
Santiago was charged with committing an act of violence at an international airport, which could lead to the death penalty, as well as two firearms offenses.
