SOUTH BEND – Home Sweet Home.
That will be the case once again as the Notre Dame women’s basketball team begins its journey in the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
The No. 2 ranked Irish will play host to the first two rounds of the event for the fourth year in a row and 12th time overall.
The No. 1 seeded Irish will face Robert Morris Friday night in Purcell Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. No. 9 seed Purdue (22-12) meets No. 8 seed Green Bay (27-5) in the first game at 5 p.m. Friday. Both games are slated to be televised by ESPN2. The winners meet on Sunday at a time still to be determined to play for a spot in the Lexington Regional March 24 and 26.
The field for the women’s tournament was set Monday night by the NCAA.
Notre Dame, which is a No. 1 seed for the sixth straight year, takes a 30-3 mark into the tournament. The Irish, who are led by senior guard Lindsey Allen, is making their 22nd straight trip to the tournament. Notre Dame had advanced to five straight Final Fours before losing to Stanford in a regional semifinal game last year.
Robert Morris won the Northeast Conference Tournament title to punch its ticket to the Big Dance for the second straight year. The No. 16 seed is 22-10 on the season.
Notre Dame faced Robert Morris in a first-round NCAA Tournament game in 2014 with the Irish posting a 93-42 victory. Notre Dame defeated Green Bay 71-67 back in November.
The Irish have won 10 straight NCAA Tournament games on their home floor in Purcell Pavilion.
Purdue is coached by former Mishawaka High School star Sharon Versyp. Versyp won the Miss Basketball Award following her senior season at MHS and then had an All-American career at Purdue. She announced last week that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, but will continue to coach the team.
Notre Dame beat Purdue in the national championship game in 2001 to win the program’s lone national title under longtime coach Muffet McGraw.
