Wawasee Sports Wrap: April 24
Softball
The Lady Warriors breathed a sigh of relief after holding off Northridge, 5-4, in a key Northern Lakes Conference matchup.
A four-run fourth gave Wawasee the edge, highlighted by a two-run homer from Meghan Fretz, an RBI double from Leah deSomer and RBI single from Kayla White.
An error allowed Wawasee’s fifth run, which was important because Northridge scratched out two runs in the seventh on a Sam Mathews RBI double and fielding error.
Fretz got the win, striking out 12 and walking none. Allison Hostetler went the distance for Ridge (6-4, 2-2 NLC), striking out four.
Elizabeth Webber and Bethany Flannery combined for six hits and six RBIs to lead Wawasee to a 13-2 JV win over Ridge.
Wawasee (11-2, 4-0 NLC) hosts Plymouth on Wednesday.
Baseball
Northridge and Wawasee couldn’t settle matters before Mother Nature said enough.
The Raiders and Warriors were tied 6-6 when darkness halted play after nine innings.
Both teams held a lead in regulation, Northridge scoring first then Wawasee grabbing a 4-1 lead until Northridge plated three in the sixth to tie the game at four. Northridge came up with two runs in the top of the ninth, only for Wawasee to get them both back in the bottom half before umpires froze the game.
The game will be completed at Northridge on May 10.
Jairus Boyer, Blaine Greer and Gavin Barker all had two hits for the Warriors, Boyer with three RBIs.
In the JV matchup, Northridge came out ahead 13-7.
Wawasee works again Wednesday at Plymouth.
