Whitko Sports Wrap: April 24
Baseball
The Whitko baseball team topped Tippecanoe Valley 5-2 Monday evening in a critical Three Rivers Conference match.
Drew Bradford picked up the win on the mound for the WIldcats. Bradford threw six and two-thirds innings in which he gave up seven hits and two walks but only one earned run. Bradford also fanned 10 Viking batters. At the plate Bradford continued to hurt Valley as was 3-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Alex Bechtold was 2-3 at the dish with an RBI, run scored and stolen base for the Wildcats. For Valley it was Tanner Trippiedi leading the way, going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Whitko (12-1, 2-0) plays Columbia City at Parkview Field Tuesday night while Valley (4-3, 1-1) hosts Maconaquah Wednesday night.
Softball
The Whitko softball team needed just four and a half innings to dispose of rival Tippecanoe Valley Monday evening. The Wildcats dominated Valley 16-1 to move to 2-0 in Three Rivers Conference play.
Whitko scored in every inning, including putting six runs on the board in both the third and fourth innings. Ellie Snep led the home squad with four RBIs, Shi Bradley added three of her own while Reannon Hopkins, Riley Insley and Anna Ousley each had a pair of RBIs. Andrea Snavely and Lexi Hall also added an RBI each. Snep also got the win on the mound, pitching all five innings, recording five strikeouts and giving up no hits.
Valley was led offensively by Mia Gunnels who had the team’s only RBI. Abby Betten had the team’s lone run in the top of the fourth.
Valley falls to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the TRC. Whitko improves to 2-0 in league play and 12-1 overall.
Tennis
The Lady Wildcat tennis team defeated county rival Columbia City 4-1 Monday night. Winning for the Wildcats were the singles players Morgan and Delaney Keirn on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, respectively. At No. 3 singles it was Jackie Werstler winning and the No. 2 doubles duo of Jenna VanCuren and Manon Sonneville.
The junior varsity also came away with a victory, winning 5-0. Winning for the Wildcats were Natalie Iholtz, Blair Creamer, Kayla Schipper and the doubles duos of Mahkinsey Myers and Lilly Owsley and Izzy Rayner and Katherine Ousley.
The Wildcats are back in action Tuesday night at home with Northrop at 5:30 pm
