Triton Sports Wrap: May 15
Girls tennis
Triton’s girls tennis team claimed wins at four of five positions on Senior Night, and the Lady Trojans topped visiting South Bend Riley 4-1 Monday.
Senior Quinn Downing defeated Alexis Nutting 6-0, 6-2 at two singles, while Siera Sauer partnered with Kaylene Slabaugh to down Sandra Alvarez and Brooke Schwing in a close 6-4, 7-5 decision at two doubles. Playing in her first ever varsity match, Connor Sherwood fell short in a third-set tiebreaker with Ruby Atkins, 6-0, 1-6, 7-6(3).
Kolbie Mason beat Lauren Beebe 6-0, 6-1 at one singles, and Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross blanked Nia Thomas and Kaitlyn Smith, love-love, at one doubles.
The Trojans moved to 7-4 on the season. Triton drew host Bremen in the semifinals at the Bremen Sectional Thursday. Plymouth opens with John Glenn Wednesday, and the winner advances to play LaVille in the other semifinal Thursday.
Also Monday night, Triton’s JV beat their Riley counterparts 5-1.
Baseball
Triton’s baseball team jumped on top in the first, and the Trojans never trailed en route to a 14-6 Hoosier North Athletic Conference victory at North Judson Monday night.
Dylan Hensley singled in Max Slusser with one out in the top of the first, Adam Stevens and Ryan Kaufman drew back-to-back, two-out walks, and Hensley scored on a wild pitch to give the Trojans a two-run lead.
Triton extended its lead with three runs in the top of the third as Hensley, Kaufman and Lucas Newman all singled in the frame. The Trojans held a 6-4 advantage in the fifth when they broke the game open with four runs off four walks, an error, a single by Connor Yoder and a passed ball. The visitors tacked on another three in the sixth when Keygan Mosier, Kaufman and Connor Pitney drew three straight walks, and Nate Flenar singled with two outs.
Pitney collected the pitching win for Triton, lasting four innings while giving up six hits for six runs and striking out four.
Hensley and Kaufman each collected multiple hits for Triton. Newman and Hensley drove in two runs each to lead the Trojans.
The game featured a combined total of 11 errors by the combatants, including seven by Judson. Triton took advantage of 13 walks.
Triton plays host to Culver Community Thursday at 5 p.m.
Softball
Triton’s softball team collected eight hits to only five by Pioneer, but a four-run fifth by the Panthers put them over the top, 7-5, in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference victory over the Trojans in Royal Center Monday night.
The visitors committed three errors to just one by Pioneer, and the home team capitalized with four unearned runs.
The game was knotted at two runs apiece until Alexis Robinson drove in the go-ahead in the bottom of the fifth, and the Panthers scratched out three more runs to take a 6-2 lead into the sixth.
The Trojans rallied with three runs over the sixth and seventh innings, but Pioneer added one more in the sixth and held on for the win.
Courtney Jennings took the loss for Triton, going six innings while surrendering seven runs and five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Hannah Woodard and Whytnie Miller each collected multiple hits for the Trojans. Woodard was 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Triton.
Bailey Zarse picked up the win for Pioneer, going the distance and giving up eight hits for five runs while striking out four and walking one.
The Lady Trojans host John Glenn Tuesday at 5 p.m.
