Fairfield, Plymouth Roll In Sectional Tennis Openers
Wednesday marked the open of the IHSAA Girls Tennis Sectional tournaments around the state, and a pair of local tourneys with area ties started its brackets.
At Goshen, Fairfield took care of business in a 4-1 win over Jimtown. All three of Fairfield’s singles courts pitched a shutout in at least one set, losing four total games. Morgan Mast and Atlanta Swank each won 6-0, 6-1 over Jenna Jaskolka and Taylor Konrath while Riley Miller won 6-2, 6-0 against Grace Crocker.
In doubles play, Falcon two doubles duo Kaylie Gaby and Madeline Gawthrop also rolled 6-0, 6-1 against Ally Isenbarger and Abby Bredenkamp. Jimtown’s lone win came at one doubles, where Kaitlyn Margraf and Anna Pope kept their season alive with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Madison Cole and Kylie Miller, allowing the Jimtown tandem to continue on in the state individual tournament.
Fairfield will meet Goshen in Thursday’s semis, opposite NorthWood versus Bethany Christian.
At Bremen, Plymouth opened defense of its title with a 5-0 romp of John Glenn.
The Pilgrims lost just six courts the entire day, four of those at one singles where Lanae Singleton beat Kelly Freehauf 6-2, 6-2. Erin Hunter and Mary Blake both won 6-1, 6-0 at two and three singles over Abby Machnic and Hannah Dickinson.
Both of the Plymouth doubles teams won in shutouts, Kendall Dreibelbis and Mckenzie Scheetz over Reagan Romer and Kimberly Bolze, and Cortni Cook and Leah Smith over Vanessa Mahmoud and Jorjia Ayers.
Plymouth will take on LaVille in the semis at DeSantis, with Bremen and Triton in the other semi-final Thursday.
